TEAM SPOTLIGHT :: NATALIE OHISHI

We have ourselves an absolute girl boss on our team! We consider her to be our secret weapon with her take-charge attitude and go-getter spirit. She is not only our right-hand in managing our business, but also a dedicated soccer coach and Director of an entire youth program! This girl more than deserves a shout-out!

NATALIE + HIBNER

Natalie started working with us fresh out of college; She was just 22! In just the 3 years she has been with us, she has been promoted 4 times! Natalie is no joke. When she sets her mind to something, she is all in. It is quite clear that this was her mentality when she started part-time as a project coordinator under Jessica. She looked at her role as more than just a list of tasks. She was constantly trying to understand the bigger picture in order to create better systems and refine the process. Her perspective became "Hibner's success is a reflection of my performance." Her sense of ownership in our company is apparent in her follow-through, attention to detail and "no BS"  demeanor. She is a ball-buster in the best way possible and keeps all of us on track. She is now our Director of Operations and we can't live without her.

NATALIE + SOCCER

Although Natalie is an integral part of our team, she has an entire other side to her revolving around soccer. Soccer is her true passion, and it makes a lot of sense that her vigor and dynamo in the office has probably come from her years on the field. She was a competitive player all the way up to collegiate level until her ACL injury at 21 years old. During her recovery, she felt a sense of void and began to transition from player to coach. She says that developing young athletes and empowering female players has been one of her biggest gifts. She has grown from being a trainer to now the Director of Coaching for an entire youth program AND simultaneously coaches 4 girls teams! She is a mentor to the girls on and off the field. They know her mantra as "you win your games at practice, not on the weekends"- emphasizing hard work and dedication pays off. She aims to instill strength, ignite passion and dedication and inspire life lessons to take on and off the field.

A LOOK INSIDE OUR OFFICE

When we aren't out shopping/sourcing or visiting job sites, we are spending a lot of time in our office, so it feels like a second home to us! This is the space in which it all goes down!- collaborating , brainstorming, scheming and undeniably- the mess making! Take a look!

PART II: Infusing Personal Style into a Mediterranean Tract Home

If you can recall, we blogged about a design challenge that, I think, many can relate to (find it here). How can one infuse their own personal style into a beige, outdated, Tuscan-style, tract home with out diving into any major renovations or remodeling? The answer is paint, lighting, furniture and good vibes!

When Maryanne and her fam moved into this space, she knew she didn't have the time and funds to devote to any major renovations. However, it was important that her new space reflected her design sensibilities and made her feel happy when she walked in the door! So, after a couple of months, Phase I is now complete!

"The space went from being super traditional and brown, to something fresher and more us. It's amazing how transformed the home feels after some fresh paint, new lighting and my favorite furniture and art!"

-Maryanne Hibner, Principal

//ENTRY

The new Arteriors light fixture is high impact because it provides a clear juxtaposition to existing, traditional finishes and forms.

The more traditional mirror and other elements help to create a bridge between the homes original character and the new, fresher sensibility.

Maryanne fell in love with this Nobilis wallcovering from France (in the niche)! We were so sad when in got delayed in customs, but it was well worth the wait!

//PLAYROOM

This HD Buttercup modular sofa sets the tone for a more casual, livable space, and the Mick Jagger art carries through the party vibes!

//GREAT ROOM

The goal is to renovate all of the kitchen's finishes in Phase II. For now, a paint, lighting, and furniture update has made huge transformation!

//MASTER BEDROOM

The St. Frank African Juju hat above the bed adds texture and personality to this space.

There was not much we could do to this bathroom without a major renovation. However, fresh paint and a new Arteriors pendant above the bathtub still managed to uplift the space.

//KID'S ROOMS

When he is not riding dirt bikes, skating or surfing, this kid is trying his hand at jamming on the guitar.

Lil' superstar!

Maryanne wanted to create a home away from for her guests.

//EXTERIOR

The large scale of these Dedon chairs worked perfectly in this firepit area.

The Hibners practically live outside during the summertime, so when it came to furniture selection, it was all about bringing comfort and livability outdoors.

The Hibner fam bam!

BEFORE + AFTER :: MEDITERRANEAN MODERN

Don't you just love it when something you worked really hard on turns out as you had hoped! This project was fairly large in scale, ranging from a Clubhouse, a Wine room to an iLounge. Each space proposed it's unique challenges. The overarching objection was to work with the Spanish/Mediterranean aesthetic of the building but freshen it up and blend in some cleaner lines and transitional details. Check out the before's and after's...

SPOTLIGHT:: PIERRE YOVANOVITCH

We are currently working on some designs for a few different amenity spaces and in researching, came across the work of Pierre Yovanovitch. We are utterly inspired! Some have described his style as "made in France" and as you dissect his work, you may be able to see why... His designs are extremely luxurious without being ostentatious and uncluttered while still conveying ample personality. His style conveys a sense of harmony with his use of sculptural elements, authentic materials and creative play with light. As we look through his work, we find ourselves audibly shouting "YES! AMAZING!"

“Very chic but restrained, minimal in its way but still warm.”

-Pierre Yovanovitch, describing French style

HIBNER GOES GOLFING

Last week we had the most awesome team-building day! We all suited up in our exposed, argyle socks and plaid, tartan caps and played a nice, civilized game of golf....JK! We had a Hibner-style golf day complete with hip-hop tunes and off-roading golf carts! The course manager had his wits about him when he saw a group of 15 unexperienced ladies show up and gave us a course entirely to ourselves! We set out to play 9 holes although some only made it to 7 (lol). After golfing, we had a super lovely lunch in which a special announcement was made- Summer became promoted to Senior Designer! In short, we had an unforgettable day which bonded us as a team and re-charged us to tackle our growing project list back at the office. We also learned, that it is a good thing some of us have found our calling in the design industry because let's just say, the golf skillz did not make any impressions!

C'est Magnifique :: Brass Base

We design a lot of custom furniture and built-ins, and so we are always examining the details of fabrication. We love to find clever ways to elevate a simple piece and infuse a bit of personality. Lately, we have been swooning over pieces with flat brass bases or toe-kicks. Check out our round-up...

HOW TO STYLE LIKE A PRO

No space is complete without the accessories and finishing touches! Layering with art, objects, lighting, and textures is pretty much always our favorite step in the process! When we are styling, we are always thinking of the fundamental design rules: scale, composition, balance, etc. Besides these basics, we have some other thoughts running through our head whilst installing....

1. Create a Color Story

2. Repetition Adds Power

3. Create Balance with Natural Elements

4. Infuse Nostalgic/Personal Touches

5. Experiment with Visual Tension

6. Layers Add Depth

7. Work with Odd Numbers

8. Add Life with Plants

9. Add a Touch of Glam

GOLDEN SPRING

Spring is going strong this year (thank you, rains)! With all the blooms occurring throughout the area, we are finding ourselves drawn to the vibrant color palette. Hillsides all around are awash with yellow! We are really into these sunny hues of gold, mustard, honey, marigold, saffron and amber!

#HIBNERLOVESGREEN

Green was voted color of the year and we couldn't agree more! It is such a refreshing color that brings life to any space, whether its a pop of plant-life or a bolder move with paint. We have gathered some HDG spaces that showcase this color in various ways. We also pulled some of our favorite green textiles, paints & products...

HOW HIBNER DOES GREEN...

GREENS WE LOVE...

NEXT STOP :: LIDO MARINA VILLAGE

This long-neglected, pedestrian-friendly stretch of harbor-front retail space has finally gotten a make-over and we are so excited about it!

Lido Marina Village, a waterfront shopping & dining property was developed in the 1970's and has a glorious past filled with lavish parties of the rich and famous. Although it has been overlooked for the past 40 years, it is back to life now, more than ever! Some of our favorite retailers and restaurants to emerge here are: Serena & Lily, Jenni Kayne, Elyse Walker, Planet Blue, Zinqué and Alchemy Works!

LIVIN' IT UP IN LAS VEGAS

We recently had the opportunity to visit the bi-annual Las Vegas Market which is an extensive exposition of furniture, home decor, and pretty much anything lovely and design-related.  We cannot even tell ya how many lounge chairs we tested out, how many yummy cocktails we had, how many times we complained about our feet hurting and how many times we said, "OMG, I love it!". We came back completely inspired! We felt as though we had a first look into some of the latest designs, trends, movements, etc. Ideas are exploding out of our heads!

ROUND-UP :: FIREPLACES

California is finally getting that rain/snow that we have so desperately been needing! It's wonderful and magical, and it makes us want to get cozy by the fireplace. We have rounded-up some dreamy fireplaces!...

HIBNER'S GIFT GUIDE

Holiday shopping can be so overwhelming! So many cute shops! So many great artisans & artists! So many options! SO... we have wrangled up some of our favorite goodies as a gift guide. Hoping to inspire!

HIBNER SPONSERS A TREE!

Anytime a charity event is based around decorating- we are SO in! We were super excited to have the opportunity to take part in a recent charity event for Child Guidance Center. This foundation is incredibly meaningful to us because it provides mental health, trauma and abuse-related counseling. Their event was called "Holiday Tree Fantasy" and our tree was "Vintage Airline" themed. We had so much fun getting inspired by vintage airline graphics and nostalgic travel relics.

NOT YOUR MOTHER'S HOLIDAY DECOR

The holidays are soon approaching! We've just had a tree delivered to the office, xmas music is blaring and we are feeling the festive vibes! We thought we'd collect some of our favorite non-traditional holiday decor- just to mix things up and expose all the groovy decorations out there!
