Christmas dinner is the ultimate time to gather with your family and friends to share in meaningful conversations, laughter and joy. Holiday tablescapes are always so fun to put together. This year, we mixed traditional and sentimental dinnerware pieces with new and modern pieces to create an updated spin on a traditional Christmas table. Our Principal, Maryanne Hibner, has a beautiful set of china that she has had in her family for years. We knew we wanted to incorporate these lovely sentimental pieces in our place settings but if we had used all the pieces from the set, it would have felt too traditional. Incorporating new gold chargers and flatware (from Target) with Maryanne's contemporary white silver rimmed dinner plates, our dining table instantly felt more modern. You might recall that the glassware we used is the same from our Friendsgiving Tablescape. As much as we love buying new items for our dinner parties, we are also practical and try to use what we have on hand first.
There is so much opportunity to make your guests feel special when you set up your dining table. Details like hand written placecards and flowers on the table go a long way. It's not only inviting for your guests to see their name at the dinner table, but knowing that you, the host, took the time to go that extra step will make them appreciate it all that much more. Not everyone loves flowers (gasp!) but they really do soften a table and bring in an organic element to an otherwise stiff and hard setting. We used an antiqued test-tube style vase for our centerpiece and kept it simple with white spray roses and sprigs of safari sunset. After a quick run to Target, we walked away with a modern white and gold table runner and glittered ornaments. These elements helped to brighten up our black wood table and bring it that touch of sparkle that every Holiday table needs. For the finishing touch, we sprinkled branches of eucalyptus down the table to soften everything just a tad more.
If you have a buffet or a place to set up dessert next to your dinner table, we highly recommend it! A beautiful dessert set up is a feast for everyone's eyes and will make a big impact when set up behind or next to your dinner table. We purchased a big box of pomegranates from Costco and filled them in a silver bowl and placed them next to our dessert stand. The gorgeous red color from the fruit was not only festive but really made the dessert area pop. Don't tell anyone, but our dessert was not homemade (we got it at Costco), but you would never know! We took it out of the box, placed it on a marble cake stand and lined it with fresh blackberries. The darkness of the berries against the marble created a bit of depth and contrast and made our cheesecake look even better. If you have beautiful silver, this is the time to use it! We have gorgeous Match silver serving spoons from No. 15 Shoppe that we brought out for serving. The key to an updated traditional Christmas is the juxtaposition of old and new. If there are any special elements that you can incorporate into your tablescape that were passed on to you by your family members, feel free to use them but make sure you incorporate the new elements so your traditonal pieces can take on new life.
